The town of San Miguel de Allende takes artwork seriously. Their art schools attract international building artists; you can find pottery, textiles, and contemporary art boutiques all over this UNESCO- protected city. Amid this art oasis is The Matilda, a unique art-centered environment with simple clean lines and smooth surfaces framed by strategically placed works of art. Through it looks like an art gallery, The Matilda is a 32-room boutique hotel. You’ll love the amenities.
The rooms have everything: flat screen televisions, free internet, high-end bedding, hair dryers and all necessary sundries. How many hotel bathrooms have mirrors that move? It’s the perfect way to apply make-up in natural light.
The views from the balconies overlook the infinity pool and multiple nearby rooftops. Style-wise, the artistic theme is carried throughout the open-air lobby, adjacent library and upstairs to the bar.
Spa experiences are the highlight here. As soon as you check-in, a young lady comes to your room offering a complimentary head and should massage. Wow, what a perfect way to relieve the tension from the hour and 1/2 plane ride. Your first encounter with the spa is a welcome hint of things to come.
Just below the flowing water of the infinity pool, The Spa Matilda offers their signature treatment: the Hammam Ritual. This is a private steam experience customized for each individual. It consists of eucalyptus-scented towels, a body scrub and clay mask. The tiled steam room has a towel-covered bench resembling the heated benches at traditional Turkish Hammams. Steam before a body treatment opens pores and begins the cleansing process. This is the best steam area, outside of Turkish Hamman, I’ve encountered. It’s private and customized to individual needs – down to the blended soap.
Next, comes the 15-minute clay mask. This stimulates circulation, accelerates cell growth and prepares skin for further treatment. You can remain in the Hamman up to 45 minutes. ( I make it about 30, but i do step out a few times to refresh with a eucalyptus scented wet towel. Time in the Hamman prepares you mentally and physically for the forthcoming treatment. Perhaps a couple’s massage?
The Hotel Matilda is a hip new edition to historic San Miguel. For a sophisticated honeymoon, this charming town – with its cobble stone roads, historic churches and authentic local art – is just the ticket.
